P-Wave Velocity

P-Wave Velocity
\[V_p=\sqrt{\frac{K+\frac{4}{3}G}{\rho}}\]

Variables

VpP-wave velocity (m/s)
Kbulk modulus (Pa)
Gshear modulus (Pa)
rhomaterial density (kg/m³)

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the propagation velocity of primary seismic waves (P-waves) through an elastic medium. P-waves are compressional waves and are the fastest seismic waves.

When to use it

Use this equation in seismology, geophysics, and Earth structure analysis when studying seismic wave propagation through rocks and underground layers.

Example

Calculate the P-wave velocity in granite with the following properties.

Data:

K = 5.0×10^10 Pa

G = 3.0×10^10 Pa

rho = 2700 kg/m³

Formula:

Vp = √((K+(4*G/3))/rho)

Substitution:

Vp = √((5.0×10^10+(4*3.0×10^10/3))/2700)

Result:

Vp = 5773 m/s

Applications

- Earthquake analysis

- Seismic exploration

- Earth interior studies

- Oil and gas geophysics

- Rock mechanics
