What is this formula?
The energy per bit to noise density ratio (Eb/N0) is one of the most important performance parameters in digital communications. It compares the energy associated with each transmitted bit to the noise spectral density present in the communication channel.
When to use it
Use this formula when evaluating digital communication links, comparing modulation schemes, estimating bit error rates, designing wireless systems, or performing link budget calculations.
Example
A receiver obtains a signal power of 1×10^-6 W. The bit rate is 1 Mbps and the noise spectral density is 2×10^-13 W/Hz.
Formula:
Eb/N0 = P/(Rb*N0)
Substitution:
Eb/N0 = (1×10^-6)/(1×10^6 × 2×10^-13)
Result:
Eb/N0 = 5
Eb/N0 = 6.99 dB

Cellular networks, satellite communications, digital television, Wi-Fi systems, deep-space communications, modem design, coding analysis, and communication system optimization.
Note
Eb/N0 is a fundamental performance metric rather than a direct physical measurement. Different modulation and coding schemes require different minimum Eb/N0 values to achieve a specified bit error rate. Practical systems often express Eb/N0 in decibels and may include implementation losses that are not represented by the ideal formula.
