What is this formula?
The Grain Moisture Content on Dry Basis equation expresses the amount of water in a grain sample as a percentage of the dry matter mass.
Unlike wet basis moisture content, dry basis moisture content compares water mass only to the dry solids present in the material.
When to use it
Use this formula for grain drying calculations, mass balances, agricultural processing, food engineering, and moisture conversion calculations.
Example
Given:
Mw = 2.5 kg
Md = 17.5 kg
Formula:
MCdb = (Mw / Md) × 100
Substitution:
MCdb = (2.5 / 17.5) × 100
MCdb = 14.29%
Result:
The grain moisture content on dry basis is 14.29%.

Note
Dry basis moisture content is widely used in engineering calculations because it simplifies mass balances during drying operations.
It should not be confused with wet basis moisture content, which is the standard used in grain trading and storage.
The relationship between wet basis and dry basis moisture is nonlinear. As moisture content increases, the difference between the two representations becomes increasingly significant.
Most commercial grain specifications use wet basis moisture content, while many engineering drying calculations use dry basis moisture content.
