Description
What is this formula?
The Mach Number is a dimensionless quantity that compares an object's speed to the local speed of sound in the surrounding medium.
It is one of the most important parameters in compressible flow and aerospace engineering.
When to use it
Use this formula when analyzing aircraft, rockets, missiles, wind tunnels, gas flows, and any situation where compressibility effects may become important.
Mach number is commonly used to classify flow regimes such as subsonic, transonic, supersonic, and hypersonic.
Example
An aircraft flies at:
Velocity = 250 m/s
Local speed of sound = 340 m/s
Formula:
M = V / a
Substitution:
M = 250 / 340
M = 0.735
Result:
Mach number = 0.74
The aircraft is flying in the subsonic regime.
Applications
Aircraft performance analysis
Supersonic flight
Hypersonic vehicle design
Rocket aerodynamics
Wind tunnel testing
Compressible flow calculations
Note
The speed of sound varies with temperature, pressure, gas composition, and altitude. Therefore, the same vehicle velocity can correspond to different Mach numbers under different atmospheric conditions. In aerospace applications, local speed of sound should be used whenever possible.
