Wave Intensity
\[I=\frac{P}{A}\]

Variables

Iwave intensity (W/m²)
Pwave power (W)
Aarea perpendicular to propagation (m²)

Description

What is this formula?

The Wave Intensity formula calculates the power transmitted by a wave per unit area perpendicular to its direction of propagation. It measures how much energy is transported through a given area every second.

When to use it

Use this formula when analyzing sound waves, water waves, seismic waves, electromagnetic waves, or energy transport through a surface.

Example

Given:

P = 50 W

A = 10 m²

Formula:

I = P/A

Substitution:

I = 50/10

I = 5 W/m²

Result:

I = 5 W/m²

Applications

Acoustics.

Optics.

Seismology.

Antenna systems.
