String Wave Speed
\[v=\sqrt{\frac{T}{\mu}}\]

Variables

vwave speed on string (m/s)
Tstring tension (N)
mu[μ]linear mass density (kg/m)

Description

What is this formula?

The String Wave Speed formula calculates the propagation speed of transverse waves traveling along a stretched string. The speed increases with tension and decreases with linear mass density.

When to use it

Use this formula when analyzing musical instruments, vibrating strings, mechanical wave propagation, or laboratory wave experiments.

Example

Given:

T = 100 N

μ = 0.010 kg/m

Formula:

v = √(T/μ)

Substitution:

v = √(100/0.010)

v = √10000

v = 100 m/s

Result:

v = 100 m/s
