Description

What is this formula?

The lattice density formula calculates the mass density of a crystalline material using its atomic structure and unit cell properties. It relates the number of atoms per unit cell with molar mass and cell volume.

Example

A crystal has:


n = 4 atoms per unit cell

M = 0.0635 kg/mol

V_c = 4.70×10^-29 m³


Using:


ρ = (nM)/(N_AV_c)


Where:


N_A = 6.022×10^23 1/mol


Substitution:


ρ = (4×0.0635)/(6.022×10^23×4.70×10^-29)


Result:


ρ ≈ 8.94×10^3 kg/m³
