Ion Sound Speed
\[c_s=\sqrt{\frac{k_B T_e}{m_i}}\]

Variables

cs[cs]ion sound speed (m/s)
kB[kB]Boltzmann constant (J/K)
Teelectron temperature (K)
miion mass (kg)

Description

What is this formula?

The ion sound speed formula calculates the propagation speed of ion acoustic waves in a plasma.

These waves are longitudinal pressure waves where ions provide inertia and electrons provide the restoring pressure force.

Ion sound speed is a fundamental characteristic velocity in plasma physics.

When to use it

Use this formula when studying ion acoustic waves, plasma transport, plasma instabilities, fusion plasmas, laboratory plasmas, and space plasma dynamics.

Example

A plasma has:

Te = 8×10^5 K

Using:

kB = 1.381×10^-23 J/K

mi = 1.673×10^-27 kg

Formula:

cs = √((kB*Te)/mi)

Substitution:

cs = √((1.381×10^-23 × 8×10^5)/(1.673×10^-27))

Result:

cs ≈ 8.13×10^4 m/s

Applications

- Ion acoustic wave analysis
