Variables

Ttemperature (K)

Description

What is this formula?

The Coulomb coupling parameter formula measures the ratio between electrostatic interaction energy and thermal kinetic energy in a plasma.

It indicates whether the plasma behaves as a weakly coupled plasma or as a strongly coupled plasma.

Low values of Γ indicate weak coupling dominated by thermal motion, while large values indicate strong particle interactions.

When to use it

Use this formula when studying dense plasmas, dusty plasmas, warm dense matter, astrophysical plasmas, plasma phase transitions, and strongly coupled plasma systems.

Example

A plasma has:

a = 2×10^-9 m

T = 5×10^4 K

Using:

e = 1.602×10^-19 C

ε0 = 8.854×10^-12 F/m

kB = 1.381×10^-23 J/K

Formula:

Γ = e²/(4*π*ε0*a*kB*T)

Substitution:

Γ = (1.602×10^-19)²/(4*π*(8.854×10^-12)*(2×10^-9)*(1.381×10^-23)*(5×10^4))

Result:

Γ ≈ 1.67
