Plasma Beta
\[\beta=\frac{2\mu_0 P}{B^2}\]

Variables

beta[β]plasma beta
mu0[μ0]vacuum permeability (H/m)
Pplasma pressure (Pa)
Bmagnetic flux density (T)

Description

What is this formula?

The plasma beta formula measures the ratio between plasma thermal pressure and magnetic pressure.

It indicates whether plasma behavior is dominated mainly by particle pressure or by magnetic fields.

Low-beta plasmas are magnetically dominated, while high-beta plasmas are pressure dominated.

When to use it

Use this formula in magnetized plasma analysis, fusion reactor design, astrophysical plasma studies, solar plasma physics, and magnetohydrodynamic modeling.

Example

A plasma has:

P = 250 Pa

B = 0.08 T

μ0 = 4π×10^-7 H/m

Formula:

β = (2*μ0*P)/B²

Substitution:

β = (2*(4π×10^-7)*250)/(0.08²)

Result:

β ≈ 0.098

Applications

- Fusion plasma confinement

- Tokamak plasma stability

- Solar corona analysis

- Astrophysical plasmas

- Magnetohydrodynamic simulations

- Plasma pressure diagnostics

- Space plasma research
