Lower Hybrid Frequency
\[\omega_{LH}=\sqrt{\omega_{ci}\omega_{ce}}\]

Variables

omegaLH[ωLH]lower hybrid angular frequency (rad/s)
omegaci[ωci]ion cyclotron angular frequency (rad/s)
omegace[ωce]electron cyclotron angular frequency (rad/s)

Description

What is this formula?

The lower hybrid frequency formula calculates a characteristic plasma frequency produced by the coupling between ion cyclotron motion and electron cyclotron motion in a magnetized plasma.

It is an important resonance frequency in plasma heating and wave propagation.

When to use it

Use this formula when studying lower hybrid waves, plasma heating systems, tokamaks, wave-particle interactions, magnetized plasmas, and plasma current drive systems.

Example

A plasma has:

ωci = 2×10^7 rad/s

ωce = 8×10^10 rad/s

Formula:

ωLH = √(ωci*ωce)

Substitution:

ωLH = √((2×10^7)(8×10^10))

Result:

ωLH ≈ 1.26×10^9 rad/s

Applications

- Lower hybrid current drive

- Fusion plasma heating

- Tokamak plasma control

- Magnetized plasma waves

- Plasma resonance analysis

- Space plasma studies

- Wave-particle interaction research
