Description
What is this formula?
The number of scattering events formula calculates how many particle interactions occur between an incident beam and a target material based on particle flux, target density, and scattering cross section.
When to use it
Use this formula in particle physics, nuclear experiments, accelerator physics, and detector interaction calculations.
Example
A particle beam has:
Φ = 5.0×10^18 1/(m²·s)
The target density is:
nt = 2.0×10^24 1/m²
The scattering cross section is:
σ = 1.5×10^-28 m²
Formula:
N = Φ*nt*σ
Substitution:
N = (5.0×10^18)*(2.0×10^24)*(1.5×10^-28)
Result:
N = 1.5×10^15 events/s
The experiment produces approximately 1.5×10^15 scattering events per second.
Applications
Particle accelerators, nuclear scattering experiments, detector calibration, collision analysis, and high-energy physics research.
