Magnetic Flux
\[\Phi_B=BA\cos\theta\]

Variables

PhiBmagnetic flux (Wb)
Bmagnetic field strength (T)
Asurface area (m²)
thetaangle between magnetic field and surface normal (rad)

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the magnetic flux passing through a surface placed inside a magnetic field. Magnetic flux depends on the magnetic field strength, surface area, and orientation angle.

When to use it

Use this equation when analyzing electromagnetic induction, transformers, electric generators, magnetic sensors, and magnetic field interactions with surfaces.

Example

A surface of area 0.15 m² is placed in a magnetic field of 0.8 T at an angle of 30° relative to the surface normal. Calculate the magnetic flux.

Data:

B = 0.8 T

A = 0.15 m²

theta = 30° = pi/6 rad

Formula:

PhiB = B*A*cos(theta)

Substitution:

PhiB = 0.8*0.15*cos(pi/6)

Result:

PhiB = 0.104 Wb

Applications

- Electromagnetic induction

- Transformer analysis

- Electric generator design

- Magnetic sensing

- Electromechanical systems
