Motional EMF

Motional EMF
\[\mathcal{E}=BLv\]

Variables

Emotional electromotive force (V)
Bmagnetic field strength (T)
Lconductor length (m)
vvelocity perpendicular to the field (m/s)

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the electromotive force generated when a conductor moves through a magnetic field. The induced voltage is proportional to the magnetic field strength, conductor length, and velocity.

When to use it

Use this equation when analyzing electric generators, moving conductors, rail guns, magnetic braking systems, and electromagnetic induction.

Example

A conductor 0.45 m long moves at 12 m/s perpendicular to a magnetic field of 0.8 T. Calculate the induced EMF.

Data:

B = 0.8 T

L = 0.45 m

v = 12 m/s

Formula:

E = B*L*v

Substitution:

E = 0.8*0.45*12

Result:

E = 4.32 V

Applications

- Electric generators

- Magnetic braking

- Rail gun systems

- Electromagnetic sensors

- Moving conductor analysis
