Faraday Induced EMF

Faraday Induced EMF
\[\mathcal{E}=-N\frac{\Delta\Phi_B}{\Delta t}\]

Variables

Einduced electromotive force (V)
Nnumber of turns
dPhiBchange in magnetic flux (Wb)
dttime interval (s)

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the electromotive force induced in a conductor due to a changing magnetic flux. It is one of the fundamental laws of electromagnetism discovered by Michael Faraday.

When to use it

Use this equation when analyzing generators, transformers, inductors, electromagnetic induction, and changing magnetic fields.

Example

A coil with 250 turns experiences a magnetic flux change of 0.08 Wb in 0.02 s. Calculate the induced EMF.

Data:

N = 250

dPhiB = 0.08 Wb

dt = 0.02 s

Formula:

E = -(N*dPhiB)/dt

Substitution:

E = -(250*0.08)/0.02

Result:

E = -1000 V

Applications

- Electric generators

- Transformers

- Induction heating

- Wireless power transfer

- Electromagnetic sensors
