Voltage Gain

Voltage Gain
\[A_v=\frac{V_{out}}{V_{in}}\]

Variables

Avvoltage gain
Voutoutput voltage (V)
Vininput voltage (V)

Description

What is this formula?

The Voltage Gain formula calculates how much an amplifier increases or decreases an input voltage signal. It is one of the most fundamental parameters in electronics and amplifier analysis.

When to use it

Use this formula when analyzing electronic amplifiers, operational amplifiers, transistor circuits, audio systems, or any circuit where an input signal is amplified.

Example

An amplifier receives an input voltage of 0.2 V and produces an output voltage of 10 V.

Given:

Vin = 0.2 V

Vout = 10 V

Formula:

Av = Vout / Vin

Substitution:

Av = 10 / 0.2

Result:

Av = 50

The amplifier has a voltage gain of 50.

Applications

Audio amplifiers, operational amplifier circuits, sensor signal conditioning, RF amplifiers, instrumentation electronics, and communication systems.
