Capacitance of Parallel Plates

Capacitance of Parallel Plates
\[C=\varepsilon_0\frac{A}{d}\]

Variables

Ccapacitance (F)
epsilon0vacuum permittivity (F/m)
Aplate area (m^2)
ddistance between plates (m)

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor in vacuum.

When to use it

Use it when analyzing capacitors formed by two parallel conductive plates separated by a dielectric-free gap.

Example

Data:

epsilon0 = 8.854e-12 F/m

A = 0.020 m^2

d = 1.0e-3 m

Formula:

C = (epsilon0*A)/d

Substitution:

C = (8.854e-12*0.020)/(1.0e-3)

Result:

C = 1.77e-10 F

Applications

Capacitor design, electrostatics, electronics, energy storage systems, electric field analysis, and electrical engineering.
