Voltage Divider

Voltage Divider
\[V_{out}=V_{in}\frac{R_2}{R_1+R_2}\]

Variables

Voutoutput voltage (V)
Vininput voltage (V)
R1upper resistance (ohm)
R2lower resistance (ohm)

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the output voltage of a two-resistor voltage divider circuit.

When to use it

Use it when reducing or scaling voltage levels in electrical and electronic circuits.

Example

Data:

Vin = 12 V

R1 = 4 ohm

R2 = 2 ohm

Formula:

Vout = Vin*(R2/(R1+R2))

Substitution:

Vout = 12*(2/(4+2))

Result:

Vout = 4 V

Applications

Electronics, sensor circuits, analog systems, signal conditioning, voltage reference design, and electrical engineering.
