RMS Voltage
\[V_{RMS}=\frac{V_p}{\sqrt{2}}\]

Variables

VrmsRMS voltage (V)
Vppeak voltage (V)

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the root mean square (RMS) voltage of a sinusoidal AC waveform from its peak voltage.

When to use it

Use it when converting peak AC voltage values into equivalent DC heating-effect values.

Example

Data:

Vp = 170 V

Formula:

Vrms = Vp/sqrt(2)

Substitution:

Vrms = 170/sqrt(2)

Result:

Vrms = 120 V

Applications

AC power systems, household electricity analysis, electronics, signal processing, power engineering, and instrumentation.
