Capacitive Reactance

Capacitive Reactance
\[X_C=\frac{1}{2\pi fC}\]

Variables

Xccapacitive reactance (ohm)
fAC frequency (Hz)
Ccapacitance (F)

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the capacitive reactance of a capacitor in an alternating current circuit.

When to use it

Use it when determining how strongly a capacitor opposes AC current at a given frequency.

Example

Data:

f = 60 Hz

C = 100e-6 F

Formula:

Xc = 1/(2*pi*f*C)

Substitution:

Xc = 1/(2*pi*60*100e-6)

Result:

Xc = 26.5 ohm

Applications

AC circuit analysis, filters, power electronics, signal processing, impedance calculations, and electrical engineering.
