Average AC Power

Average AC Power
\[P=V_{RMS}I_{RMS}\cos(\phi)\]

Variables

Paverage AC power (W)
VrmsRMS voltage (V)
IrmsRMS current (A)
phiphase angle (rad)

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the average power delivered in an AC circuit considering the phase difference between voltage and current.

When to use it

Use it when analyzing real power consumption in alternating current systems containing resistive and reactive components.

Example

Data:

Vrms = 120 V

Irms = 10 A

phi = 0.524 rad

Formula:

P = Vrms*Irms*cos(phi)

Substitution:

P = 120*10*cos(0.524)

Result:

P = 1039 W

Applications

Power systems, electrical engineering, AC circuit analysis, industrial loads, power factor correction, and energy calculations.
