Weight from Mass and Gravity

Weight from Mass and Gravity
\[W = mg\]

Variables

Wweight force (N)
mmass (kg)
ggravitational acceleration (m/s²)

Description

What is this formula?

The weight equation calculates the gravitational force acting on a mass due to gravity. Weight depends on both mass and local gravitational acceleration.

When to use it

Use this formula when analyzing loads, forces on structures, lifting systems, mechanical design, or any problem involving gravity.

Example

A mass of 75 kg is located on Earth where gravitational acceleration is 9.81 m/s².

Data:

m = 75 kg

g = 9.81 m/s²

Formula:

W = m*g

Substitution:

W = 75*9.81

Result:

W = 735.75 N

Applications

Structural engineering, mechanical systems, lifting equipment, aerospace engineering, physics education, and load calculations.
