Impulse from Force and Time

Impulse from Force and Time
\[J = Ft\]

Variables

Jimpulse (N·s)
Fconstant force (N)
ttime interval (s)

Description

What is this formula?

The impulse equation calculates the change in momentum produced by a force acting over a period of time. Impulse is equal to the area under a force-time graph.

When to use it

Use this formula when analyzing impacts, collisions, braking systems, rocket propulsion, or any event where force acts during a time interval.

Example

A force of 150 N acts on an object for 0.4 s.

Data:

F = 150 N

t = 0.4 s

Formula:

J = F*t

Substitution:

J = 150*0.4

Result:

J = 60 N·s

Applications

Collision analysis, automotive safety, sports physics, aerospace engineering, impact mechanics, and mechanical system design.
