Description

What is this formula?

The Average Daily Exposure (ADE) formula calculates the average amount of a substance to which an individual is exposed each day during a defined exposure period.


When to use it

Use this formula when evaluating occupational, environmental, dietary, or accidental exposures where total exposure over a period is known and an average daily value is needed.


Example

A worker is exposed to a total of 1800 mg of a solvent over a 90-day monitoring period.


Data:

TE = 1800 mg

ED = 90 days


Formula:

ADE = TE / ED


Substitution:

ADE = 1800 / 90


Result:

ADE = 20 mg/day

Note

This formula provides a simple average and assumes exposure is distributed uniformly over the exposure period. Real-world exposures may fluctuate substantially from day to day. More advanced exposure models may be required when exposure variability is important.
