Description
What is this formula?
Physiological Dead Space Fraction quantifies the proportion of each breath that does not participate in gas exchange. It is commonly calculated using the Bohr equation and is an important measure of pulmonary efficiency.
When to use it
Use this formula when evaluating ventilation efficiency, monitoring critically ill patients, assessing pulmonary embolism, or studying respiratory physiology.
Example
Data:
VD = 0.15 L
TV = 0.50 L
Formula:
VDVT = VD / TV
Substitution:
VDVT = 0.15 / 0.50
VDVT = 0.30
Result:
Physiological Dead Space Fraction = 0.30
Applications
- Critical care medicine
- Mechanical ventilation
- Pulmonary physiology
- Pulmonary embolism assessment
- Evaluation of ventilation efficiency
Note
The physiological dead space fraction can be estimated using volume measurements or calculated more accurately using the Bohr equation based on carbon dioxide measurements. The Bohr method is generally preferred in clinical physiology because it better reflects true gas exchange efficiency.
