\[\dot V_E=V_T\times RR\]
Variables
VE[V̇E]minute ventilation (L/min)
TVtidal volume per breath (L)
RRrespiratory rate (breaths/min)
Description
What is this formula?
Minute Ventilation is the total volume of air moved into or out of the lungs each minute. It is calculated as the product of tidal volume and respiratory rate.
When to use it
Use this formula when assessing respiratory function, monitoring mechanically ventilated patients, evaluating exercise physiology, or calculating overall pulmonary ventilation.
Example
Data:
TV = 0.50 L
RR = 14 breaths/min
Formula:
VE = TV × RR
Substitution:
VE = 0.50 × 14
VE = 7.0 L/min
Result:
Minute Ventilation = 7.0 L/min
Applications
- Respiratory physiology
- Mechanical ventilation
- Critical care monitoring
- Exercise testing
- Pulmonary function assessment
