Description
What is this formula?
The Renal Plasma Flow Estimate formula calculates the volume of plasma delivered to the kidneys per unit time. Since only plasma can be filtered through the glomeruli, renal plasma flow is an important parameter in renal physiology.
When to use it
Use this formula when evaluating renal hemodynamics, glomerular function, renal perfusion, or kidney physiology.
Example
Data:
RBF = 1200 mL/min
Hct = 45 %
Formula:
RPF = RBF × (1 − Hct/100)
Substitution:
RPF = 1200 × (1 − 45/100)
RPF = 1200 × 0.55
Result:
RPF = 660 mL/min
The estimated renal plasma flow is 660 mL/min.
Applications
- Renal physiology
- Nephrology
- Renal hemodynamic studies
- Kidney perfusion assessment
- Medical education
Note
This formula provides an estimate of renal plasma flow based on renal blood flow and hematocrit. Direct measurement of renal plasma flow is traditionally performed using para-aminohippurate (PAH) clearance techniques. The calculated value assumes uniform hematocrit and normal blood distribution within the renal circulation.
