Description
What is this formula?
The CKD-EPI equation estimates glomerular filtration rate (GFR) using serum creatinine and age. It was developed to improve the accuracy of kidney function estimation, particularly in individuals with relatively preserved renal function.
When to use it
Use this formula when assessing chronic kidney disease, monitoring renal function, or estimating kidney filtration capacity in adults.
Example
Data:
SCr = 1.2 mg/dL
Age = 60 years
Formula:
eGFR = 141 × (SCr / 0.9)^-1.209 × 0.993^Age
Substitution:
eGFR = 141 × (1.2 / 0.9)^-1.209 × 0.993^60
Result:
eGFR ≈ 63.7 mL/min/1.73 m²
The estimated glomerular filtration rate is approximately 63.7 mL/min/1.73 m².
Applications
- Chronic kidney disease staging
- Renal function assessment
- Nephrology
- Internal medicine
- Clinical laboratory reporting
Note
This formula represents a simplified CKD-EPI creatinine equation for adult males. The complete CKD-EPI model includes sex-specific coefficients and additional adjustments. CKD-EPI generally provides better accuracy than MDRD at higher levels of kidney function and has become one of the most widely adopted methods for estimating glomerular filtration rate.
