\[NFB=I-O\]

Variables

NFBnet fluid balance (L)
Itotal fluid intake (L)
Ototal fluid output (L)

Description

What is this formula?

The Net Fluid Balance formula calculates the difference between total fluid intake and total fluid output over a defined period of time.

When to use it

Use this formula to assess hydration status, monitor hospitalized patients, evaluate fluid therapy, and track fluid retention or loss.

Example

Data:

Fluid intake = 2500 L

Fluid output = 1800 L

Formula:

NFB = I - O

Substitution:

NFB = 2500 - 1800

Result:

NFB = 700 L

A positive value indicates fluid gain, while a negative value indicates net fluid loss.

Applications

- Hospital fluid monitoring

- Intensive care units

- Postoperative care

- Renal disease assessment

- Intravenous fluid therapy management
