Description
What is this formula?
The Rate Pressure Product (RPP), also known as the Double Product, is a simple index that estimates myocardial workload and oxygen demand. It combines systolic blood pressure and heart rate into a single parameter.
When to use it
Use this formula during exercise testing, cardiovascular assessment, cardiac rehabilitation, and evaluation of myocardial oxygen demand.
Example
Data:
SBP = 120 mmHg
HR = 75 beats/min
Formula:
RPP = SBP × HR
Substitution:
RPP = 120 × 75
Result:
RPP = 9000 mmHg·beats/min
Applications
- Exercise stress testing
- Cardiac rehabilitation
- Estimation of myocardial oxygen demand
- Cardiovascular fitness assessment
- Evaluation of antianginal therapies
Note
Rate Pressure Product is an indirect indicator of myocardial oxygen consumption and cardiac workload. Although it correlates reasonably well with myocardial oxygen demand, it does not account for all physiological factors affecting cardiac metabolism. The result should be interpreted as an estimate rather than a direct measurement.
