Myocardial Oxygen Consumption Index

\[MVO2I=0.000014*RPP\]

Variables

MVO2Imyocardial oxygen consumption index
RPPrate pressure product (mmHg·beats/min)

Description

What is this formula?

The Myocardial Oxygen Consumption Index (MVO2I) provides an estimate of the oxygen demand of the heart muscle. Because direct measurement of myocardial oxygen consumption is invasive and complex, clinical practice commonly uses the Rate Pressure Product (RPP) as a surrogate indicator.

When to use it

Use this formula to estimate myocardial workload during exercise testing, cardiovascular assessment, ischemia monitoring, and evaluation of antianginal therapies.

Example

Data:

RPP = 12000

Formula:

MVO2I = 0.000014 × RPP

Substitution:

MVO2I = 0.000014 × 12000

Result:

MVO2I = 0.168

Applications

- Exercise stress testing

- Cardiac rehabilitation

- Ischemia risk assessment

- Evaluation of antianginal treatment

- Cardiovascular research

Note

This formula is an empirical approximation based on the Rate Pressure Product (RPP). Several alternative models exist in the medical literature. The result should be interpreted as an estimated myocardial oxygen demand indicator rather than a direct physiological measurement of oxygen consumption.
