Column Stability Factor
\[C_s=\sqrt{\frac{\sigma_{cr}}{F_y}}\]

Variables

Cscolumn stability factor
sigmaCr[σcr]critical buckling stress (Pa)
Fyyield strength (Pa)

Description

What is this formula?

The column stability factor compares the critical buckling stress of a column with the yield strength of the material. It provides a measure of how strongly column behavior is governed by buckling versus material yielding.

When to use it

Use this formula when evaluating compression members and column stability. It is useful in structural steel design and in understanding the transition between yielding-controlled and buckling-controlled behavior.

Example

A steel column has:

σcr = 120 MPa

Fy = 250 MPa

Formula:

Cs = √(σcr/Fy)

Substitution:

Cs = √(120/250)

Result:

Cs = 0.693

A lower value generally indicates that buckling effects are more significant relative to material yielding.

Applications

Steel columns, compression members, stability analysis, structural design, column classification, and buckling assessment.

Note

This factor is a simplified stability indicator derived from the relationship between elastic buckling resistance and material strength. Design standards often use more sophisticated stability factors and column curves that account for imperfections, residual stresses, section shape, and fabrication effects.
