Section Modulus
\[S=\frac{I}{c}\]

Variables

Ssection modulus (m³)
Isecond moment of area (m⁴)
cdistance from neutral axis to extreme fiber (m)

Description

What is this formula?

The section modulus is a geometric property used in structural engineering to quantify the bending strength of a beam cross-section. It relates the second moment of area to the distance from the neutral axis to the most highly stressed fiber.

When to use it

Use this formula when analyzing beams, girders, columns, and structural members subjected to bending moments. It is commonly used to calculate bending stress and compare the efficiency of different cross-sectional shapes.

Example

A steel beam has a second moment of area of 8.5×10^-5 m⁴ and the distance from the neutral axis to the extreme fiber is 0.15 m.

Formula:

S = I / c

Substitution:

S = (8.5×10^-5) / 0.15

Result:

S = 5.67×10^-4 m³

Applications

Structural steel design, reinforced concrete design, bridge engineering, building frames, machine components, and beam selection for bending resistance.
