\[T_{CPU}=IC\times CPI\times T_C\]

Variables

TcpuCPU execution time (s)
ICinstruction count (instructions)
CPIaverage cycles per instruction
Tcclock cycle time (s/cycle)

Description

What is this formula?

CPU Execution Time calculates the amount of processor time required to execute a program.

It is one of the fundamental performance equations in computer architecture and software engineering.

The formula combines:

- the number of instructions executed,

- the average cycles required per instruction,

- and the processor clock cycle time.

When to use it

Use this formula when:

- analyzing software performance,

- comparing processor architectures,

- estimating program execution time,

- evaluating compiler optimizations,

- studying CPU bottlenecks.

Example

A program executes:

IC = 5,000,000 instructions

The processor has:

CPI = 1.8

Clock cycle time:

Tc = 0.5 ns = 0.5×10^-9 s

Formula:

Tcpu = IC × CPI × Tc

Substitution:

Tcpu = 5,000,000 × 1.8 × 0.5×10^-9

Tcpu = 0.0045 s

Result:

CPU Execution Time = 4.5 ms
