Description
What is this formula?
ASME F&D Torispherical Head Tank Volume calculates the total internal volume of a horizontal cylindrical vessel equipped with two standard ASME Flanged and Dished (F&D) torispherical heads.
The total volume is obtained by adding the cylindrical shell volume and the combined volume of both torispherical heads.
ASME F&D heads are among the most common head geometries used in pressure vessels because they offer a good compromise between manufacturing cost, structural performance, and storage capacity.
When to use it
Use this formula when the vessel is equipped with standard ASME F&D torispherical heads.
It is commonly applied to:
- Pressure vessels
- Air receivers
- Chemical vessels
- Petroleum process vessels
- LPG equipment
- Industrial storage tanks
Example
A vessel has:
D = 3.0 m
L = 8.0 m
Formula:
V = πD²L/4 + 0.1618D³
Substitution:
V = π×3²×8/4 + 0.1618×3³
V = 56.55 + 4.37
Result:
V = 60.92 m³
The vessel contains approximately 60.92 m³.
Applications
- ASME vessel sizing
- Pressure vessel design
- Process equipment
- Industrial storage tanks
- Petroleum facilities
- Capacity estimation
Note
The coefficient 0.1618 represents the combined volume contribution of two standard ASME F&D torispherical heads and is widely used as an engineering approximation.
This formula is intended for capacity estimation and inventory calculations.
Actual head volume may vary slightly depending on manufacturing tolerances, corrosion allowance, fabrication details, and the exact crown radius and knuckle radius specified by the vessel manufacturer.
For detailed mechanical design, the dimensions shown on fabrication drawings should always take precedence.
