Variables
Description
What is this formula?
The Resource Extraction Rate (ERR) measures the average amount of a resource extracted during a specified period of time.
It is one of the most fundamental indicators used in mining, petroleum production, groundwater withdrawal, forestry management, and other resource industries.
The extraction rate is commonly used for production planning, sustainability assessments, equipment sizing, and forecasting future output.
When to use it
Use this formula when evaluating:
- Mine production rates
- Oil and gas production rates
- Groundwater pumping rates
- Timber harvesting operations
- Long-term resource management plans
Example
A mining operation extracts 7.5 million tonnes of ore during one year.
Data:
Q = 7,500,000 t
t = 1 year
Formula:
ERR = Q / t
Substitution:
ERR = 7,500,000 / 1
Result:
ERR = 7,500,000 t/year
The average extraction rate is 7.5 million tonnes per year.
Applications
- Mining engineering
- Petroleum engineering
- Water resource management
- Forestry planning
- Resource economics
- Sustainability analysis
