Description
What is this formula?
Total Haulage Resistance calculates the total resistance that a haul truck must overcome while moving along a mine haul road.
It combines rolling resistance, caused by tire deformation and road surface conditions, with grade resistance, caused by the road slope.
This value is widely used to estimate truck performance, travel speed, fuel consumption, and power demand.
When to use it
Use this formula when:
- Evaluating haul road performance.
- Estimating truck travel resistance.
- Comparing alternative haul routes.
- Calculating fuel and energy requirements.
- Planning mine transportation systems.
Example
A haul road has a rolling resistance of 35 kg/t and a grade resistance of 80 kg/t.
Data:
RR = 35 kg/t
GR = 80 kg/t
Formula:
TR = RR + GR
Substitution:
TR = 35 + 80
Result:
TR = 115 kg/t
The total haulage resistance is 115 kg/t.
Applications
- Open-pit mining
- Haul road design
- Truck performance analysis
- Fleet planning
- Fuel consumption estimation
- Mine transportation engineering
Note
This formula is a simplified engineering estimate. Real haulage resistance can also be affected by acceleration, braking, curves, road roughness, tire condition, payload distribution, weather, and operating speed. It is commonly used as a practical first estimate in mine haulage calculations.
