Sump Retention Time
\[t=V/Q\]

Variables

tsump retention time (h)
Vsump storage volume (m³)
Qinflow rate (m³/h)

Description

What is this formula?

Sump Retention Time calculates how long water can remain in a mine sump before the stored volume is completely filled by incoming water.

It is a fundamental parameter in mine dewatering design because it indicates the available response time before overflow occurs.

A larger retention time provides greater operational flexibility during pump failures, maintenance, power outages, or unexpected inflow events.

When to use it

Use this formula when:

- Designing mine sumps.

- Evaluating dewatering capacity.

- Planning emergency water storage.

- Assessing flooding risk.

- Determining backup pumping requirements.

Example

A mine sump has a storage capacity of 600 m³. Groundwater enters the sump at a rate of 50 m³/h.

Data:

V = 600 m³

Q = 50 m³/h

Formula:

t = V / Q

Substitution:

t = 600 / 50

Result:

t = 12 h

The sump can store incoming water for approximately 12 hours before becoming completely full.

Applications

- Underground mine dewatering

- Sump sizing

- Emergency storage design

- Flood risk assessment

- Water management planning

- Pump redundancy studies

Note

This formula assumes a constant inflow rate and does not consider active pumping. Actual retention time may vary due to changing groundwater conditions, rainfall, seasonal effects, pump operation, sediment accumulation, and variations in mine water inflow. It should be viewed as a first-order engineering estimate.
