Pumping Rate for Mine Dewatering

Pumping Rate for Mine Dewatering
\[Q=\frac{V}{t}\]

Variables

Qpumping rate (m³/h)
Vwater volume to remove (m³)
tpumping time (h)

Description

What is this formula?

Pumping Rate for Mine Dewatering calculates the average flow rate required to remove a specified volume of water from a mine within a given period of time.

It is one of the most fundamental calculations in mine dewatering and is used to size pumps, pipelines, and water management systems.

When to use it

Use this formula when:

- Designing mine dewatering systems.

- Selecting dewatering pumps.

- Estimating required pumping capacity.

- Planning water removal operations.

- Evaluating emergency flooding scenarios.

Example

A mine sump contains 1800 m³ of water that must be removed within 12 hours.

Data:

V = 1800 m³

t = 12 h

Formula:

Q = V / t

Substitution:

Q = 1800 / 12

Result:

Q = 150 m³/h

The dewatering system must provide an average pumping rate of 150 m³/h.

Applications

- Open-pit mine dewatering

- Underground mine dewatering

- Sump design

- Pump selection

- Water management planning

- Flood control systems

Note

This formula provides the average pumping rate required over the specified time period. Actual pump sizing should also consider inflow rates, pump efficiency, standby capacity, friction losses, maintenance requirements, and possible future increases in water inflow.
