Coke Rate
\[CR=\frac{m_{coke}}{m_{metal}}\]

Variables

CRcoke rate (kg coke/kg metal)
mCokecoke consumption (kg)
mMetalmetal production (kg)

Description

What is this formula?

The Coke Rate calculates the amount of coke required to produce a unit mass of metal.

It is one of the most important performance indicators in blast furnaces and other pyrometallurgical operations because coke serves both as a fuel and as a reducing agent.

Lower coke rates generally indicate improved energy efficiency and lower production costs.

When to use it

Use this formula when evaluating blast furnace performance, benchmarking metallurgical operations, estimating fuel requirements, or monitoring process efficiency.

Example

A blast furnace consumes:

Coke consumption = 450000 kg

Hot metal production = 1000000 kg

Formula:

CR=mCoke/mMetal

Substitution:

CR=450000/1000000

CR=0.45 kg/kg

Result:

The furnace requires 0.45 kg of coke per kilogram of hot metal produced.

Applications

- Blast furnace operation

- Ironmaking

- Energy efficiency analysis

- Fuel consumption monitoring

- Process optimization

- Cost estimation

Note

This is an operational performance indicator rather than a fundamental physical law. Actual coke rate depends on ore quality, burden composition, oxygen enrichment, pulverized coal injection, furnace design, and operating practices. Modern blast furnaces often achieve lower coke rates through auxiliary fuel injection and process optimization.
