Description
What is this formula?
The Liquid-to-Solid Ratio calculates the amount of leaching solution used per unit mass of solid material.
It is one of the most important operating parameters in hydrometallurgy because it influences reagent consumption, extraction efficiency, solution chemistry, filtration performance, and operating costs.
Higher liquid-to-solid ratios generally improve contact between the solution and the solid but increase solution handling requirements.
When to use it
Use this formula when designing or operating leaching circuits, agitation tanks, heap leaching systems, washing stages, and solid-liquid separation processes.
Example
A leaching tank contains:
Leaching solution volume = 2500 L
Ore mass = 1000 kg
Formula:
LS=VL/mS
Substitution:
LS=2500/1000
LS=2.5 L/kg
Result:
The operation uses 2.5 liters of solution per kilogram of ore.
Applications
- Heap leaching
- Tank leaching
- Pressure leaching
- Counter-current washing
- Filtration operations
- Process optimization
Note
This is an operational design parameter rather than a fundamental physical law. The optimum liquid-to-solid ratio depends on ore characteristics, reagent concentration, slurry rheology, extraction targets, and downstream processing requirements. Different hydrometallurgical processes may employ substantially different liquid-to-solid ratios.
