Description
What is this formula?
Throughput Rate measures the quantity of products, parts, or units produced per unit of time. It is one of the most widely used manufacturing performance indicators because it directly reflects production capacity.
When to use it
Use this formula when evaluating production capacity, comparing manufacturing lines, identifying bottlenecks, estimating output, or planning production schedules.
Example
A production line manufactures 1,800 components during an 8-hour shift.
Data:
Q = 1800 units
t = 8 h
Formula:
TR = Q / t
Substitution:
TR = 1800 / 8
Result:
TR = 225 units/h
The manufacturing line produces an average of 225 units per hour.
Applications
Production planning
Capacity analysis
Bottleneck identification
Manufacturing performance monitoring
Operations management
Note
This formula represents an average production rate. Actual throughput may vary throughout the production period due to downtime, setup changes, maintenance activities, material shortages, or process variability.
