Variables
Description
What is this formula?
Overall Equipment Effectiveness measures how effectively a manufacturing machine or production line is being used. It combines availability, performance, and quality into a single percentage indicator.
When to use it
Use this formula to evaluate manufacturing efficiency, identify production losses, compare equipment performance, monitor continuous improvement programs, and support lean manufacturing decisions.
Example
A packaging line has an availability of 0.88, a performance rate of 0.92, and a quality rate of 0.97.
Data:
A = 0.88
P = 0.92
Q = 0.97
Formula:
OEE = A × P × Q × 100
Substitution:
OEE = 0.88 × 0.92 × 0.97 × 100
Result:
OEE = 78.49 %
The production line has an overall equipment effectiveness of 78.49%.
Applications
Lean manufacturing
Production monitoring
Equipment performance analysis
Process improvement
Manufacturing KPI tracking
Note
OEE is a practical performance indicator, not a physical law. Its interpretation depends on how availability, performance, and quality are defined in the plant. Different companies may calculate the three components using slightly different operational criteria, so comparisons should use consistent definitions.
