Description
What is this formula?
First Pass Yield (FPY) measures the percentage of products that meet quality requirements on the first attempt without rework, repair, or correction. It is one of the most important quality indicators in manufacturing because it reflects the true effectiveness of a production process.
When to use it
Use this formula when evaluating process quality, monitoring production performance, identifying sources of defects, or supporting Six Sigma and lean manufacturing initiatives.
Example
A production line processes 2,500 parts during a shift. Of those, 2,350 meet all quality requirements on the first pass.
Data:
T = 2500 units
G = 2350 units
Formula:
FPY = (G / T) × 100
Substitution:
FPY = (2350 / 2500) × 100
Result:
FPY = 94 %
The process achieves a first pass yield of 94%.
Applications
Quality control
Lean manufacturing
Six Sigma programs
Process improvement
Manufacturing performance analysis
Note
FPY measures only units that pass inspection without rework. Some organizations may calculate related metrics such as Rolled Throughput Yield (RTY) or Final Yield, which can produce different values depending on how rework and inspection stages are handled.
