Description
What is this formula?
Injection Molding Clamping Force calculates the minimum force required to keep the mold closed during the injection process. The force must be sufficient to resist the pressure generated by the molten material inside the mold cavity and prevent flash defects.
When to use it
Use this formula when selecting an injection molding machine, designing molds, estimating production requirements, or verifying whether an existing machine can safely manufacture a specific part.
Example
A plastic component has a projected area of 0.025 m². During injection, the cavity pressure reaches 32 MPa.
Data:
A = 0.025 m²
P = 32,000,000 Pa
Formula:
Fc = P × A
Substitution:
Fc = 32,000,000 × 0.025
Result:
Fc = 800,000 N
The mold requires a minimum clamping force of 800 kN.
Applications
Injection molding machine selection
Mold design
Plastic manufacturing
Production planning
Flash defect prevention
Note
This formula provides the theoretical minimum clamping force. In industrial practice, a safety factor is usually applied to account for pressure variations, flow imbalances, material characteristics, and process tolerances. Different manufacturers may recommend different safety margins.
