Casting Yield
\[Y=\frac{W_c}{W_t}\times100\]

Variables

Ycasting yield (%)
Wcnet casting weight (kg)
Wttotal poured metal weight (kg)

Description

What is this formula?

Casting Yield measures the percentage of poured metal that becomes useful finished casting. It is one of the most important efficiency indicators in foundry operations because it quantifies how much metal ends up in the final product versus gates, runners, risers, and other process losses.

When to use it

Use this formula when evaluating foundry efficiency, estimating material utilization, comparing mold designs, reducing metal waste, or calculating production costs.

Example

A foundry pours 125 kg of molten metal into a mold system. After removing runners and risers, the final casting weighs 95 kg.

Data:

Wt = 125 kg

Wc = 95 kg

Formula:

Y = (Wc / Wt) × 100

Substitution:

Y = (95 / 125) × 100

Result:

Y = 76 %

The casting process converts 76% of the poured metal into useful product.
