Description

What is this formula?

Material Removal Rate (MRR) measures the volume of material removed from a workpiece per unit time during a machining operation. It is one of the most important productivity indicators in manufacturing because it directly reflects how quickly material is being removed.


When to use it

Use this formula when evaluating machining productivity, comparing cutting parameters, estimating cycle times, selecting machining conditions, or optimizing manufacturing costs.


Example

A milling operation uses a width of cut of 40 mm, a depth of cut of 3 mm, and a feed speed of 250 mm/min.


Data:


w = 40 mm


d = 3 mm


v = 250 mm/min


Formula:


MRR = w × d × v


Substitution:


MRR = 40 × 3 × 250


Result:


MRR = 30,000 mm³/min


The machining process removes 30,000 cubic millimeters of material per minute.
