Description
What is this formula?
Machining Time calculates the time required for a cutting tool to travel a specified machining distance at a given feed rate. It is one of the most widely used manufacturing calculations because it directly affects production planning, machine utilization, and manufacturing cost estimation.
When to use it
Use this formula when estimating cycle times, preparing production schedules, calculating machining costs, selecting process parameters, or evaluating manufacturing capacity.
Example
A turning operation requires a tool to travel 450 mm along the workpiece. The feed rate is set to 180 mm/min.
Data:
L = 450 mm
Vf = 180 mm/min
Formula:
tm = L / Vf
Substitution:
tm = 450 / 180
Result:
tm = 2.50 min
The machining operation requires approximately 2.5 minutes.
Applications
Cycle time estimation
Production planning
CNC programming
Manufacturing cost estimation
Capacity analysis
Note
This equation provides the theoretical cutting time only. Actual production time is often longer because it may include tool approach, tool retraction, tool changes, setup operations, workpiece handling, inspection, and machine delays.
