Description
What is this formula?
Feed Rate calculates the linear speed at which a cutting tool advances relative to the workpiece. It is one of the primary machining parameters because it directly affects productivity, surface finish, tool life, and cutting forces.
When to use it
Use this formula when selecting machining parameters, programming CNC machines, estimating cycle times, or optimizing cutting conditions.
Example
A turning operation uses a feed per revolution of 0.25 mm/rev and a spindle speed of 800 rev/min.
Data:
f = 0.25 mm/rev
N = 800 rev/min
Formula:
Vf = f × N
Substitution:
Vf = 0.25 × 800
Result:
Vf = 200 mm/min
The cutting tool advances at a rate of 200 mm/min.
Applications
Turning operations
Drilling operations
CNC programming
Cycle time estimation
Machining optimization
Note
This equation is commonly used in turning and drilling operations. In milling, feed rate is often calculated using feed per tooth and the number of cutter teeth, which leads to a different but related formula.
