Description

What is this formula?

Cutting Power calculates the mechanical power required to remove material during a machining operation. It relates cutting force and cutting speed, making it useful for checking whether a machine tool has enough available power for the selected cutting conditions.


When to use it

Use this formula when estimating machining power demand, selecting machine tools, verifying cutting parameters, preventing spindle overload, or comparing machining conditions.


Example

A turning operation uses a cutting force of 1200 N and a cutting speed of 180 m/min.


Data:


Fc = 1200 N


Vc = 180 m/min


Formula:


Pc = (Fc × Vc) / 60000


Substitution:


Pc = (1200 × 180) / 60000


Result:


Pc = 3.60 kW


The machining operation requires approximately 3.6 kW of cutting power.
